No Doubt About Doubt

Often when we get in touch with our most heartfelt and hopeful dreams, what may also surface are some of our doubts. There is an important relationship between (what I refer to as) the Dreamer and the Doubter that lives inside each of us. It is useful and necessary to develop skills for dealing with our doubt; otherwise your dreams could very well get squelched.

The Dreamer inside of us encourages us with thoughts and comments like, "Yes you can. Go for it. You have what it takes." By contrast, the internal Doubter voice may challenge and confront with comments such as, "What are you thinking? You're too old (or too young), you don't know what you're doing, and you don't have the money or experience."

If we turn the voice of the Doubter down it becomes the voice of the Realist, the part of us that wants to know what we intend to do. Most often, the Realist wants to know where you will find the time and money, it wants to know your plan, but be careful. Early on, you may not have all the details figured out, so if you go to strategic planning too soon, your need to be realistic may have you compromise on your idea before you fully explore what else is possible.

Consider this. If all parts of us carry wisdom, perhaps even the Doubter can provide insight. If you interviewed this part of yourself, literally asked about its concerns and issues about your dreams, you might get some useful information. For example, my own Doubter often offers thought-provoking questions and prudence.

Your Doubter could inform you of potential obstacles related to your dreams. Obstacles come primarily in two forms. They are either limiting beliefs, something that requires internal reflection or that you hold to be true. Alternatively, obstacles can also be something more external, something that require a plan, such as borrowing money or taking a class.

For example, if your dream is to write a book but you don't know how, you might seek assistance or learn how to do it yourself. But if what you are feeling is fear of failure, which is usually more of a limiting belief, something is going on inside of you that only you can change or affect. Of course, once you identify what you're afraid of, a strategy like working with a coach or a daily practice of writing might get you over it. Some obstacles can be both belief and strategy.

Wherever there is an obstacle, you can manage it. But if you don't know there are obstacles present you may get blind-sided or sabotage your dream. It is incredibly beneficial to hear from your Doubter. Be interested in what it has to say. Pull out a journal or pad of paper and explore what your real, imagined or potential obstacles may be. Knowledge is a powerful thing.

Most people either ignore or get consumed by their doubt. I assure you, once you become aware that there is a Doubter inside of you that is not the enemy, you are much less likely to be stopped by it. Confusion and procrastination are often signs that the Doubter is present but not being acknowledged. How do you feel when you are trying to express and not being heard? I suggest you watch for signs; then, stop and listen.

Once you are able to learn from your doubt, other people's doubts will have less impact on you. How might your life change if other people's negative comments only deepened your conviction to your dream? Once you deal with your own doubt you will no longer put the beliefs of others over your own. This is a sign of transformation as you become more inner-referenced. This can lead to deeper self-trust, which in turn will enable you to take greater risks and dream bigger dreams!

Do Something You Love

What haven’t you done for a long time that brings you joy or a sense of achievement?

Life is full of all the things we need to do and have to do, which is what responsibility dictates.

Dreams dry up when we are overly “adult” or when there is little joy.

Create a Support System to Make Your Dream Reality

Build Your Dream Team.

Identify at least two essential people in your life to share your dream with. Now, call, write or email them today.

Don’t hesitate! Seize this singular moment to take action.

Clearly share your vision with each of them.

Make a simple request that they can easily do in helping you reach your dream.

With the right support, achieving your dream becomes easy.

Connect with Yourself and Discover Your Passion

Be Soul Full. Plan a “soul day” where you can explore other aspects of your self.

You are not made from the clothes you wear, the car you drive, or the house you live in. Use art supplies, music, dance, anything that will help you reconnect to a deeper part of you.

Cultivate and create! Connecting with yourself on a deeper level will help you achieve your dream.

Go on a PassionQuest.

For a period of time, use passion as a barometer for deciding what you will and won’t do (when choice is an option).

Over the next few days, whether work-related or during personal time, notice what excites you versus what drains you.

Reignite your passion by simply doing more of what you love.

Confide and Trust

Confide in Someone You Trust.

Discuss your thoughts and feelings with an empathetic friend or professional.

Consider what answers you may want from them, versus those you may need to hear.

Be open and objective to their feedback and reflection. Imagine and appreciate their point of view.

April 15, 2006

Commit to Your Dream

Demonstrate Your Commitment.

Are you more committed to your dream or to your doubt?

Do the things you hold close embody your innermost values?

You can tell by the action you are or are not taking everyday.

Prove that your dream is a priority by making time for it and taking powerful steps forward.

Clear Your Mind

Clear Your Mind.

Notice any tension you’re facing right now. Imagine it drifting farther away as you slow your breathing, relax your body, and quiet your mind.

Carve out this quiet time to listen to a part of you that rarely gets heard.

Beneath the daily turmoil, hear the wisdom in your whispers.

April 7, 2006

Build Your Community

Build Your Community and share your dream.

Model what it means to be a big Dreamer by creating an environment where everyone is encouraged to pursue their dreams.

Help each other and make allowances for U-turns.

Knowing that we are part of something larger than ourselves is invaluable, especially during challenging times.

Be Playful

Be Playful.

Do you remember the sound of your laughter?

Recognize what makes you happy and bring more of what you love into your daily life.

Rekindle your sense of humor and do things that not only make you smile, but that make you giggle.

Extra credit is awarded for making someone else laugh.

Be Inspiring and Let Life Inspire You

Be Inspiring.

Show up big, bold and outrageous.

Let your creative spirit and beautiful bright light shine.

Be the spark that ignites passion at home and at work.

Demonstrate what it means to be a true Dreamer, by following your heart and encouraging others to do the same.

To inspire means “to breathe.” And as oxygen is necessary to sustain life, so inspiration is to dreaming.

Discover what moves you. Dance, sing or simply express the feeling of the moment. Relish it and own it.

With your passion present, ask yourself what your dreams are.

Be Courageous, Outrageous and Audacious

Be Courageous.

Follow your heart and act on something that you know to be true for you.

Demonstrate that you are committed to at least exploring your dream and prove to yourself that it’s important by doing something. The saying “action speaks louder than words” never ringed so true.

Living powerfully includes being authentic and compassionate.

Live large yet genuine.

Trade the mundane for the unexpected.

Each day laid out before us is precious and unique from the one before and what will come tomorrow.

In the end, however it arrives, you can say, “I truly lived my life.”

March 17, 2006

Be a Dream Coach®

Be a Dream Coach®.

Ask someone to share their dream with you and tell them why you believe they can accomplish it.

Ask them what they are doing to make that dream happen.

Encourage them to take action and to let you know when they do.

We all have a little Dream Coach inside of us.

#1 of 140 Tips to Make Your Dreams Come True

Tip #1 of 140: A New Positive Outlook

Try a New Outlook. See something that you didn’t see before. Find qualities that you really admire about the moment, a friend, or a co-worker. Appreciation is developed by taking a moment to pause, breathe and see with new eyes. Take a closer look and acknowledge something that you even appreciate about yourself.

Imagine the Best. Dream big, bold and in living color for yourself and others as you share your dreams. Form a bond of trust as you reveal your inner most dreams honestly and wholeheartedly. Amazing people, places and things are waiting for you right now.
