A Custom Picture Framer Dream Come True
I know so many amazing women who give of themselves and enrich everyone else around them. But yesterday was an exciting, life-changing day for me. I have been a custom picture framer for 25 years and a local artist for 13 years here in Southern Maryland. But it was only three years ago that I decided to open a frame shop of my own. I took what space that was available in the antique mall where I already sold antiques and opened my 'little' custom frame shop. I was so chicken to even do that, and waited too long to make a decision on a larger space. I thought my old framing customers would never find me; that I wouldn't have enough business, etc. Well my loyal customers who are also my friends ALL found me, and have kept me amazingly busy. There was one month this Spring where I had 120 pictures to frame, and I operate the shop by myself. I still frame the old-fashioned way with vises. But, two weeks ago, some changes were made in another building across the parking lot, which enabled a space three times larger than mine to become available. I worked on obtaining a loan to buy all the framing equipment I would need to operate a more efficient, competitive shop with faster turn around times. Though all my customers are wonderful and willing to wait for quality custom work. This brings me back to yesterday, when I found out I had the funding to buy everything I need, plus create a warm, but professional gallery space in the front of the shop for my own, and other artist's work.
I have dreamt of nothing else for two weeks, but how to arrange the space and make everything flow and work together. Now my dreams are coming true, actually they did 25 years ago, because I am one of those lucky people that love what they do, even my twenty minute drive through corn fields and farmland is beautiful and inspiring.
I believe you should find something creative to do every day of your life, whether it be with your hands, heart or mind. I'm still scared a little of making the big move, but I have so many loving, encouraging fiends, and family behind me, especially my husband, that they have swept me up in their faith and enthusiasm. I'm dreaming of success!
